Every so often, a file lands on your Mac that it simply cannot open. A .msg from a colleague on Windows. A winmail.dat attachment that arrived instead of the email that you were expecting. An archived email someone dug out of an old Outlook export.
MailRaider is the app that opens them, and it has been since 2009 - longer than any other tool on the Mac App Store. It handles these formats the way they were meant to be read: preserving full formatting, embedded images, and attachments as far as possible.
What MailRaider opens:
.msg – Microsoft Outlook messages
.eml – standard email format
.oft – Outlook template files
winmail.dat – the mystery attachment that hides what was actually sent
What you can do with them:
Read emails with full formatting, colour-coded headers, and embedded images
View and extract attachments
Export to PDF, RTF, or EML to keep a portable copy (save them to MailRaider on your iPhone or iPad!)
Export contacts to .vcf and calendar appointments to .ics
Drag (or double click) files straight from Finder — it just works
If you need to process large archives, work with PST or OLK mailboxes, MailRaider Pro has you covered. But if your needs are more straightforward – you get these files occasionally and you just need to open them – this is exactly what you need.

I only test it with mail in English, text is fine, but those rich format, such as table, is lost. If you just occionally read .msg on Mac, it is OK, but for more uses, maybe Pro should be considered, but I haven’t tried it.

This update improves formatting consistency across all supported file types, so emails look right regardless of how they were originally composed or exported. Email headers are now colour-coded, making it easier to read sender, recipient, date, and subject at a glance. A range of bugs have been fixed, with particular attention to reliability and robustness across edge cases in .msg and winmail.dat parsing.

Here's an interesting problem - a winmail.dat whose RTF stream doesn't contain RTF, it contains embedded HTML. Opening this would result in (best case) an empty email or (worst case) a crash. This update to MailRaider fixes that problem.

I’m worried that some people have been experiencing crashes in MailRaider - and these crashes haven’t been reported to me, so there’s nothing I can do to fix them!
This version of MailRaider will detect if a crash occurs and offer to write an email with a crash report and send it to me if there’s a problem. It won’t do it immediately - there will need to be two consecutive crashes for this functionality to be triggered, but hopefully this will make it easier to report a problem and we can make MailRaider better for everyone.
In addition, I’ve added additional protections against corrupted msg files.

There are also improvements to the memory management to further improve stability.

It would appear that the last update to MailRaider caused problems for some users on the App Store. I am still trying to get to the bottom of this, but my investigations lead me to believe that the problem may be at the App Store end rather than with MailRaider itself.
